Lunch Lectures

To complete the technical program during the lunch break slots, three exciting lunch lectures are offered. Two of them, on Wednesday and Friday, focus on the Industrial Pathway of academics in the industry and on experiences during sabbaticals for senior academics in the industry. The third lunch lecture is a tutorial organized by Mathworks introducing dynamic modeling and control design.

Please be informed that the lunch vouchers included in the conference fee are valid in the Ch@t café, which is located close to HS7 and offers snacks and beverages “to-go”.

Wednesday Lunch Lecture: Industrial Pathway
Speakers: Sergiy Zhuk and Randy Cogill
Topic: Putting fuel in the tank, Part 1: Early career adventures in industry
Time and Location: Wednesday, July 15, 12:00 – 13:00, HS7

Description: In this talk, two early-career researchers will discuss their experience at IBM Research. Examples of IBM Research projects will be provided, highlighting the balance between business and research contributions.

Sergiy Zhuk joined IBM Research after his postdoc.
Randy Cogill joined IBM Research after being a Professor in the US.

Thursday Lunch Lecture: MathWorks
Topic: Multi-Domain Plant Modeling and Control Design for Multi-Loop Decentralized Control Architecture
Time and Location: Thursday, July 16, 12:00 – 13:00, HS7

Description: In this tutorial we will show how to create a dynamic model of mechanical components of a robot arm by automatically importing CAD assembly from SolidWorks into Simulink. We will then explain how to model and calibrate DC motor actuators and how to combine electrical and mechanical components into the overall plant model. We will next demonstrate different control design methods including automatic tuning of individual PID controllers, as well as simultaneous, automatic tuning of the overall multi-loop decentralized control architecture. Finally, we will discuss different options for controller deployment, including deployment to dedicated target computers as well as low-cost hardware targets such as Arduino.

Friday Lunch Lecture: Industrial Pathway
Topic: Putting fuel in the tank, Part 2: Sabbaticals for senior academics in industry
Speaker: Fabian Wirth
Time and Location: Friday, July 17, 12:00 – 13:00, HS7

Description: Fabian Wirth joined IBM Research for a one year sabbatical. He can say describe the benefits of industry from the perspective of a very established Professor who is interested in the opportunity to apply systems engineering ideas to new problems, and using new problems to motivate new research in systems theory (the fuel in the tank).
